Wednesday, May 8, 2013 - Movie Night and Discussion

“A Place at the Table" - 6:30 - 8:15 pm in the AHUMC Fireside Room

Please join us for an enlightening evening as we show the documentary "A Place at the Table" followed by discussion on what we can do to change the hunger problem in our communities.  49 million people in the U.S. - one in four children - don't know where their next meal is coming from, despite our having the means to provide nutritious, affordable food for all Americans. Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine this issue through the lens of three people who are struggling with food insecurity.

The movie shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that it could be solved once and for all.  NPR writes the "documentary ' A Place at the Table' is a call to action on hunger."

Come be engaged in this important issue.  We will have a food drive in conjunction with this event on May 8th. We are asking for canned vegetables and protein (such as tuna and peanut butter).

If you have questions about this event contact Martha Rice, Community Outreach Director.

Faith Group News

4 Groups ~ 32 People ~ 390 Hours logged to date

Approximately 20% of our regular Sunday attendance!

Lots of room for you to join

Our Faith Group ministry is starting up again for anyone who missed the launch in December! We invite you to learn more about this exciting new opportunity to grow in your faith by contacting one of our Faith Group coordinators listed below! You can join an existing group or sign-up to join a new group based on interest and meeting times. We are also looking for those that are called to lead a Faith Group. Some groups will meet through the summer with other groups beginning/continue in the fall.

A new faith group is forming with Viv LaRock as leader. The first topic for study will be Sally Dyck’s book A Faithful Heart. Existing groups that will continue through the next couple months include the Thursday morning Men's group led by Mark Youngstrom and Keith Wells, and a Wednesday evening study on the Church Lectionary led by Jim Watson. Our hope is that everyone will grow in their faith and grow closer to others in a Faith Group.

Contact Mark Youngstrom or Amanda Earle if you are interested in learning more about Faith Groups at Arlington Hills UMC.

Mission Outreach News

April Showers Bring… Flooding! In response to Bishop Ough’s challenge to MN United Methodists to prepare 5,000 cleaning buckets to replenish UMCOR supplies, the mission focus at Arlington Hills UMC during the month of May will be collecting items or monetary donations for flood buckets to be delivered to the Annual Conference in St. Cloud May 28.

A list of items can be downloaded here and is available at the display in the narthex. If you wish to donate any of these items, please bring them to church before May 26. Assembled bucket contents average $55. But, a donation of $25 will cover the cost of a bucket as items can be purchased in bulk at a considerable savings. (Please indicate “Flood Buckets” on the check memo). If every household in our congregation would donate the value of one bucket ($25), many flooded homes could be helped by your generosity.

Pastor Chip and annual conference delegate, Sheldon Manthei, will be bringing donations of bucket items and a check from our congregation to Annual Conference May 28. Reaching out to help those in need is one of the greatest gifts we can give. Thank you AHUMC mission-minded friends!
